Richard A. Oppel (born c. 1943 in Florida [ [http://archives.cjr.org/year/97/1/austin.asp Holley, Joe. "Old Values, New Life: The revival of the Austin American-Statesman." "Columbia Journalism Review", January/February 1997.] ] ) is an American journalist and was editor of the "Austin American-Statesman" from 1995 to 2008. [ [http://www.pulitzer.org/CurrentBoard/oppelbio.html The Pulitzer Prizes - Board - Profile] ] [http://www.statesman.com/search/content/editorial/stories/05/11/0511oppel_edit.html] . He had previously been editor of the "Charlotte Observer", which had earned three Pulitzer Prizes (sharing one with the "Atlanta Constitution" for editorial cartoons) under his editorship.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Oppel graduated from the University of South Florida and began his career with "The Tampa Tribune".

He worked for the Associated Press and the "Detroit Free Press" before becoming executive editor of the "Tallahassee Democrat" in 1977, and then editor of the "Charlotte Observer" in 1978.

Oppel is married to Carol V. Oppel, a freelance writer specializing in religious topics.

A son, Richard A. Oppel, Jr., is a foreign correspondent for "The New York Times".
