2008 Summit Series

A Summit Series between Canada and Russia has been proposed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the International Ice Hockey Federation. The proposal was made by Bob Nicholson, president of Hockey Canada. It would feature 8 games, the first four in Russia, the next four in Canada. (The 1972 Summit Series started in Canada and went to the Soviet Union (Moscow)). Hockey Canada would also use it as a sort of training camp for Team Canada, in preparation for the 2010 Olympics. The series would be held in the fall of 2008.

The proposal is threatened by a dispute between the NHL and Russian hockey federations on the drafting of Russian hockey players into the NHL. The NHL has poor relations with the IIHF, however Hockey Canada has good relations with the NHL.
