Gary Paulsen . It mostly tells of Paulsen and stories of his dog teams. The last part of the book tells about his race in theIditarod Trail Sled Dog Race , a 1,153 mile dog sled race fromAnchorage, Alaska toNome, Alaska .Paulsen describes his life from when he first got a team of sled dogs. He thought he knew a lot about the woods but then realized how ignorant he was and started to found how it really was. After always training with the sled race dogs, he enter his one team of 15 dogs into the Iditarod, an approximately 1,153 mile long sled dog race from
Anchorage, Alaska toNome, Alaska . It takes him 16 1/2 days to complete the race and he is always tired and suffers from hallucinations and finishes in almost last, but it doesn't matter to him. Most of the book, however, is about the times when he was running his sled dog team. There were times when he got violently ill on a sled run and makes it back and times when he gets hurt badly on the a run and the dogs help him to get safety. The dogs are what help and save him in so many situations and he becomes very close to them, especially a few like Storm. Storm is a dog that taught him the most. He was a very good, strong, and "truthful" dog. Unfortunately, with all he taught Paulsen about life, she also taught him about death when he was about 14 years old. Many other things taught him of nature and the woods along the way.
