Rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc

rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc is a Usenet newsgroup for fans of the cult TV series "Mystery Science Theater 3000" to gather and post public messages related to the show. It was created after the users of the newsgroup "alt.tv.mst3k" worked to create a newsgroup in the Big 8 hierarchy.

The original fruit of the Big 8 campaign effort was "rec.arts.tv.mst3k", which after a year split into the current "rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc" and "rec.arts.tv.mst3k.announce".

This newsgroup is noteworthy for sparking one of the few successful campaigns to save a TV show from cancellation. When the cable channel Comedy Central announced that it would no longer purchase new episodes of "MST3K," the show's legions of Internet users banded together and campaigned for the show to continue. Users of the newsgroup purchased a full-page advertisement in the popular entertainment industry magazine "Variety" to make their plight known to Hollywood. As a result of the campaign, the show was picked up by the Sci Fi Channel, where it continued for three more seasons before it was canceled for good by a management change at the channel.
