Cambrian Hill Football League

Cambrian Hill Football League

The Cambrian Hill Football League ("also known as the Cambrian Hill Sporting League") is based in Victoria, Australia. The League is loosely based on Australian Rules Football, and plays once a year in honour of the Premiership Cup (usually in September).

History

The League was formed in 1938 as a competition between Whatmore's Marvels and the Soviet Malones at the Cambrian Hill Football Ground, close to the gold rush city of Ballarat. In the years following, the tradition of the annual end-of-year game arose. Later, such honours as the Wayne Barclay Best on Ground trophy began to appear, along with the singing of the national anthem before the game.

1999 saw a prestigious year in the League's development, when the first film crews began to attend as spectators and players were drawn from around the state to Cambrian Park. Soon after, the Whatmore's Marvels dropped the first part of their name and became simply 'The Marvels'. The next years proved a large step for women's rights activists attending, and Jennifer Bryck became the first woman to umpire for the League. The hype of the game coninued to grow steadily, and in 2006, Cambrian Park had both female goal and centre umpires, and introduced the Women's League - the Malonies versus the Marvelettes, in corresponding style.

Current Issues

The League is under constant threat from the Park Administration - the ground that as been their home for over sixty-eight years is due to be sold, and though no buyer has yet been found, it is probable that the lush grounds of the noble Cambrian Hill Football League will be turned into grazing land for cattle, due to a nearby dam.

The League are currently (2008) in negotiations with an unknown party to take over disused factories closer to Bacchus Marsh, where they plan to inaugurate an indoor version of the game with a foam ball to reduce the ceiling requirements.
