- Pelican case
Pelican cases, designed by
Pelican Products , are molded plastic containers that seal with an airtight and watertight gasket. Pelican cases include a barometric relief valve made ofGore-tex to preventbarotrauma to the case, during transportation, or when the air pressure in the environment may change. Most Pelican cases comply with US Military, NATO, IEC, and ATA standards for waterproofing, stacking, impact, and durability. Standards that Pelican cases comply with include
MIL-STD C4150-J for waterproofing, IEC IP67 rating indicating complete sealing against dust and sealing against water immersion to 1 metre, as well asATA 300 rating indicating compliance withAir Transport Association standards for durability in shipping. In Europe, they are sold as Peli cases due to the name "Pelican" being trade marked by another company.
Water leakage through barometric relief valve
If the case falls into a river, generally (if it is not too full), there will be enough air in the case to keep it afloat. The barometric relief valve is made of
Gore-tex , which is a hydrophobic membrane. It permits air to pass through, but not water or other liquids, including acids. Under some extreme conditions leakage is technically possible, but such conditions are unlikely to be encountered, except in the case of deliberate vandalism.Lifetime Guarantee
The company boasts a lifetime guarantee for all of its products. Interestingly, it is noted on the company website [citeweb| last = Pelican | title = Pelican Product Lifetime Guarantee | url = http://pelican.com/support/guarantee.php | accessdate = 2007-02-09] that this guarantee does not cover shark bite, attack by bears, or children under the age of 5.
Pelican has confirmed that this is a gag:
Good Morning Cody,
I myself have been wondering about that since I started here, so I went and asked. Apparently, that has always been our tag line for our warranty so that people would remember us. Our warranty will cover any wear and tear that our cases go through. So if you have a case that has been eaten by a shark or mauled by a bear then we would cover that. I think that they would even cover 5 year kid damage. So I guess that it is sort of a joke, depending on how the bear, shark or child got a hold of the case.
