Plot

After Dr. Kelso admits his friend Maggie Kent (Victoria Tennant), J.D. and Turk must try to beat the system to treat her due to her lack of insurance. To briefly distract him, J.D. and Turk offer to take him to get massages. After the uncomfortable incident back at the spa, Turk and J.D. pull a prank on Ted, which causes him to hit the hospital's power generator.

After reviewing the budget to see if the hospital can afford another one, Dr. Kelso is shocked at the amount of money spent on scrubs. It is revealed that almost everyone in the hospital is stealing them. Dr. Kelso confronts the staff and asks for the people who have been stealing scrubs to pay the hospital back and be immediately fired. After no one admits to stealing anything, Dr. Kelso is forced to change the colour of the scrubs to dirt brown, that way, no one is tempted to steal them.

The next day, Dr. Kelso finds Maggie in the park with her leg still untreated. She says that its because she doesn't have insurance. Angrily, he walks to the hospital and asks why didn't everyone do what they always do when a patient has no insurance; he reveals that he knows full well that there is a method to cheat the insurance and had expected the group to go through with it. In "My Two Dads", Cox had not followed this method and got in trouble. J.D. states, "But if you're going to threaten to fire us over taking a pair of scrubs, why wouldn't we think you'd fire us for treating an uninsured patient?" Turk says, "Yeah, when you took away the scrubs, you took away the trust and without trust...everything falls apart." Dr. Kelso sees that he has no option but to let the staff have their normal scrubs back even at the cost of having them stolen. Maggie is last seen being treated, even with Dr. Kelso's full knowledge of her not having insurance.

Elsewhere, the Janitor confronts Carla with an unusual favour, to borrow Isabella. He says that he is going into the baby broker business to hook up people who cannot have babies with people that do not want babies. After saying no and asking him to leave, Carla decides to tear out a number for a device called "baby lowjack".

Later in the break room, Carla is the startled by the Janitor holding Rowdy. He then explains how the Rowdy he is holding is the real one and asks Carla to recall a few years back when she lost the real Rowdy ("My First Kill"). The Janitor then blackmails Carla and requests the following (along with aforementioned request of wanting Isabella):to tell the borderline, anorexic nurse to eat a sandwich and then to go Salsa dancing with him and to teach him to Salsa dance, bring him a pound of frankincense and to be his official beverage taster. Carla scoffs at the idiotic ploy and says that she'll just admit to Turk what she did. But shortly after, she caves in, seeing as how Turk really cares deeply for Rowdy. Soon, though, she gets fed up and thinks of a plan to get out of the Janitor's blackmail. She steals Steven from Turk's car with Laverne's help. After the Janitor shows up with Rowdy, J.D. and Turk believe that it was him who stole Steven. Carla comes clean but the two are delighted to have two stuffed animals.

Meanwhile, Sam (Alexander Chaplin), who appeared in ("My Moment of Un-Truth" and "My Rite of Passage") as a drug addict, returns to the hospital as the new drug counselor. Dr. Cox tries to convince Elliot that Sam is still the scamming, drug-addict he always was and when Laverene tells Dr. Cox that ten orders of Percocet have gone missing, he immediately suspects Sam as the culprit. When Sam is checked and tested, Dr. Cox is still convinced that Sam is lying. Determined to catch Sam slip, he sits through one of Sam's lectures. After telling Dr. Cox that he finally has changed, Lloyd (also a former drug addict) comes in and backs Sam up by saying how great of a job Sam is doing. Lloyd reveals Sam requires the addicts to bring in any drugs they have left. Dr. Cox is impressed at Sam's cleverness and wants to rub it in Elliot's face. But soon, he instead apologizes to Sam for not believing in him. Questioned, Cox reveals he knows Elliot will soon become as cynical as everyone else; she didn't need his help.

Cultural references

  • Dr. Cox's mentions how he hates the summing up of the storyline in Grey's Anatomy, which is what Scrubs does at the end of every episode. This is the second reference made to the show, the first being in "My Buddy's Booty". Elliot dislikes generic voiceovers; J.D. then walks by doing just such a one.
  • Before stealing the dog from the car, Carla explains her plan to Laverne. Laverne ignores everything, then says "Let's do this!" and yells out her name: "Laveeeerne Robeeeeerts!". This is a reference to Leeroy Jenkins in World of Warcraft video game.
