Interview with Kimmel on "Larry King Live"
Emily Gould appeared on an episode of "
Larry King Live " hosted by talk show hostJimmy Kimmel onApril 6 ,2007 during a panel discussion entitled "Paparazzi : Do they go too far?" During the interview, Kimmel accused Gould of irresponsible journalism resulting from Gould's popular blog. Gould attempts to respond but appears very nervous during the interview, and constantly rolls her eyes. Kimmel repeatedly interrupts her and cuts her off, leaving Gould, clearly not used to television interviews, shocked and stuttering. She tries to makes a few legitimate responses, but in general just seems surprised and hurt by how Kimmel (and the two celebrity lawyers beside him in the interview) repeatedly castigate her and her website.Among the privacy issues resulting from what Gould calls "citizen journalism" that comprises the
Gawker.com Stalker Map, Kimmel mentioned the power this could grant real stalkers, and that Gould and her website may ultimately be responsible for someone's death. In response, Gould said "We've been doing it for four years and it hasn't happened yet." Kimmel continued further to claim a lack of effort on the part of the site's publishers to verify facts in their stories, and the legal cases oflibel that this will ultimately present for Gawker. Kimmel mentions a Gawker piece about himself being sighted and described as "drunk," at a time when he says he was actually with his children and other family members. "I didn't find it funny at all," Kimmel says in the interview. On
May 4 ,2007 , Gould wrote an article for the "New York Times" about the interview.
