Ballysillan

Ballysillan

Ballysillan (Irish: Baile na Saileán; meaning "townland of the willow groves") is an Electoral ward of North Belfast based on the district of the same name. The ward was created in 1973 when it was carved out of the former Clifton ward. The boundaries have been little altered since.

The area has always been strongly loyalist and the percentage of those giving Roman Catholicism as a community background at 4.1% in the 2001 Census [http://www.nisranew.nisra.gov.uk/Census/Census2001Output/standard_tables_lgd.html] was one of the lowest figures in Belfast.

Famous sons of Ballysillan include Jake Burns and Henry Cluney, both of the band Stiff Little Fingers.
