The Institute of Public Health

The Institute of Public Health (国立公衆衛生院, Kokuritsu Kōshū Eisei-in) is the government research organization for the improvement of the public health in Japan, which was reorganized and abolished in 2002. The organization is reorganized by a bill on April 1 in 2002, becomes "Kokuritu Hoken Iryohka gakuin" (national institute of public health) with "Kokuritsu Kansensho Kenkyujyo" (part of National Institute Of Infectious Diseases) and by "Takyokubunnsann-gata Kokudokeisei sokushin-hou" (the multipolar and decentralized society forming accelerated method), at present, it is moved to Saitama Prefecture Wakoushi. The purpose of the establishment is for the improvement of the public health in Japan, the training of technical experts engaged in, and as a research organization devoted to, public health.

History

*1938: Established by "Kohshu eiseiinn kannsei" (The Institute of Public Health system of government proclamation) (The "Koseisho" (the Ministry of Health and Welfare jurisdiction}).
*1940: It is changed to "Koseikagaku kenkyujyo" (Welfare National Science Laboratory), and merged with "Eiyoh kenkyujyo" (a nutritional institute) under "Naimusho" (the interior ministry jurisdiction ). The building where the institute currently resides was designed by architect "Shozo UCHIDA" and built in 1940.
*1941: It merges the part of "Taiiku kinky-jyo" (the gym institute) under "Monbu-sho" (the Ministry of Education) jurisdiction.
*1942: It integrates into "Kohseisho kenkyujyo" (the Ministry of Health and Welfare institute) under "Koseisho" (the Ministry of Health and Welfare) jurisdiction.
*1946: It abolioshed "Koseisho kenkyu-jyo" (the Ministry of Health and Welfare institute) and it becomes "Koshueiseiinn" (The Institute of Public Health) once more.
*1949 June 1: It is changed to "Kokuritsu Koshueiseiinn" (Institute of Public Health).
*2002 April 1st: It reorganizes as "Kokuritsu hokeniryo kagakuin" (the national institute of public health).

The help of John Davison Rockefeller foundation

The building and the facilities of The Institute of Public Health are the one which was donated to Japanese Government, receiving about 3,000,000 yen help in 1938 from American John Davison Rockefeller foundation. It neighbored Tokyo daigaku ikagaku kenkyu-jyo (the same as the University of Tokyo Institute of Medical Science) and the attachment hospital was established.
