Albany Middle School, known as AMS, serves grades six through eight for students in
Albany, California . Thepublic school combines students graduating from the city's three elementary schools: Cornell, Marin, and Ocean View. The school operates under theAlbany Unified School District . It is the only middle school in the district. After graduation from the school, students continue to either Albany High School or MacGregor High.The school opened in 1999 at its current location of 1259 Brighton Ave. Previously it was at 1000 Jackson St, where Ocean View Elementary School is currently located.
Overview
Albany Middle School offers band and an arts and drama program (with a yearly play) and a large sports program. Sports offered at the school include basketball, cross country, a championship-winning track and field team, wrestling, and volleyball. In the 2006-07 the 8th grade girls basketball team won the East Bay Regional championship. The school also offers a leadership program. Albany's test scores are among the top in the East Bay.Fact|date=July 2008
The school teaches around 920 kids. The school is fairly well known for its volleyball teams. During the 2007-2008 school year, the school also had a
Mathcounts team that won the chapter (regional) competition. They progressed to the state level competition at UC Davis. Of the eight original competitors (at the chapter level), five moved up, names disclosed, due to privacy for the students. The school's principal is Robin Davis and vice principal is David Neumann. It's mascot is the black and goldcobra . The school colors are black and gold/yellow.There is also a Library Media Center, with many computers available for usage. Usage, however, is limited to school work, with games and other programs prohibited.
Controversies
The school also suffers from crowding. Staff is constantly increasing and there are not enough classrooms (the school has started moving into the adult school across the street for teaching space).Fact|date=July 2008
