Radio Medica is the Hospital Radio Service in Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is based at the Goole and District Hospital on Woodlands Avenue.

History

Radio Medica or the "Goole Hospitals Broadcasting Service" was founded in 1974 by Chris Poulton and John Follon. The first programme was presented by Jimmy Saville. In those days the station operated with very basic equipment from a small converted bathroom at the old St. John's Hospital in Goole. Things progressed until the station was broadcasting to three hospitals in Goole, as well as hospitals in Howden, Rawcliffe and Hook. In 1986, with the completion of the new hospital, most of the other buildings closed and a brand new studio was built at the Woodland Avenue complex. Even in those days the station was still using only vinyl records and tape cartridge machines. Progression in the late 1980s saw the fitting of CD players and in the 1990s MiniDisc players made their debut. Because of Radio Medica was never a 24 hour operation, the station would take programmes from Viking FM. In 2000 the station increased its broadcasting hours and with the help of automation, is on air 24 hours a day.

Future plans

Radio Medica intends to apply for an LPAM licence, allowing their broadcasts to be received on Medium Wave domestic radios rather than the present internal headset, Patientline and television sound service [http://www.radiomedica.co.uk/FutureProjects.html] .A number of Radio Medica presenters have also been involved with the sucsessful community radio licence bid in Market Weighton under the name of Vixen FM.

tudios

The studio is equipped with a Studiotech Series A mixer, 2 x Denon CD players, 2 x Technics turntables, 2 x Sony minidisc machines, 1 x Myriad automation system, 1 reel to reel tape machine, 2 x Beyer M69 microphones and a stack of Sonifex CQ cart machines, still used by some presenters! The edit booth contained various equipment including a CD player, and a Myriad playout system.
