community radio station inThorne , nearDoncaster inSouth Yorkshire [http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/TMCR+87.9] .TMCR was set up as a
Restricted Service Licence or 'trial station' to see how it would be received by the communities ofThorne andMoorends . Supported byDoncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, and with financial backing through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, a four week period on-air was run from a studio in Thorne.Launch
TMCR was launched in the Summer of 2005 on 87.9 FM. The opening was performed by
Ed Miliband MP in his capacity as member for Doncaster North.taff
The station is run by a
committee of local people and a team of volunteers. Many of the presenters have been drafted in from severalhospital radio stations, such asTrust AM andRadio Medica .Background
After the temporary broadcasts, TMCR re-opened to provide
training in the media forvolunteer s who wish to be involved in the running of theradio station . However, due to lack of funding, the doors closed at the end of February 2006. The project was revived later in 2006, but without funding was unable to make any further broadcasts. The group left their office and studio in January 2007, with all equipment being put into storage. In April 2007, a small amount of funding was obtained to provide rent and other expenses through to early 2008. As such, TMCR has moved to a new office in May 2007. Preparation is being made for the long-term future of the station.
The Future & Licence Application
An application for a full 5-year licence was submitted to
Ofcom in June 2007 [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/futureradio/responses/tmcr.pdf] [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radio/ifi/rbl/commun_radio/tlproc/applications/yorkapps/] . On December 20th 2007 an announcement was made by OfCom that TMCR was to be offered a five-year community radio license [http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2007/12/nr_20071220] .In January 2008, the committee registered the group as a company limited by guarantee, no 6471394, in preparation for the future expansion of the group and the service it offers. There are three directors, Gordon Sharpe is the company secretary, with Malcolm Lindley and Robert Ashton being the other two.
There were plans to make further short-term broadcasts but funds are too tight for this to happen in 2008. If all the funding and license applications go according to plan, the station will return to the airwaves in early 2009.
