As a pro, Mercein is best remembered for his performance in the Packers' game-winning drive in the 1967 NFL Championship Game, known popularly as the Ice Bowl. That day, he ran six times for 20 yards, and had two receptions for 22 yards, most of which occurred in that game's final drive.
Mercein, along with Packers guard Jerry Kramer and linebacker Dave Robinson, provided commentary about the 1967 Green Bay Packers in the NFL Network documentary America's Game . His inclusion was notable in that unlike Kramer and Robinson, who both had long and storied careers with the Packers, Mercein was signed mid-season, and after the Ice Bowl, appeared in but one more game with the team (Super Bowl II).
At Yale University Mercein was an All-American and All-Ivy League selection.
