The station originally opened as Edge Lane on
20 July 1849 by the Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway (MSJAR). Renamed Stretford in September1849 . Operated as a four-platform station from circa 1900 until 1963. Closed as aBritish Rail station on24 December 1991 . Reopened as a Metrolink station on15 June 1992 .
