"The Heretic Anthem" (also known as "Heretic Song") is a promotional single by American metal band Slipknot, from their 2001 studio album, "Iowa". It was released in Germany in 2001 by Roadrunner Records, and later in 2002 to promote the band's then-upcoming "Disasterpieces". "The Heretic Anthem" was performed live on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on October 8, 2001. The song is sometimes incorrectly called "555 To The 666"

Release

The song has been released twice as a promotional single. Prior to the release of "Iowa", a rough mix of the song (then titled "Heretic Song") was released on a promotional CD in Germany. In 2002, the release of a promotional CD containing a live performance of the song, as well as its video footage, preceded the band's 2002 film, "Disasterpieces".

Song Meaning

It was written about record labels who initially showed no interest in signing a recording contract with the band. The lyrics, "I bleed for this and I bleed for you/ Still you look in my face like I'm somebody new/ TOY - nobody wants anything I've got/ Which is fine, because you're made of/ Everything - I'm - NOT", reflect this attitude.
