Richard Cummings (writer)

Richard Cummings is an author, playwright, theorist and critic. He is the author of the comedy "Soccer Moms From Hell" and the biography of Allard Lowernsein, "The Pied Piper - Allard Lowenstein and the Liberal Dream," which discloses Lowenstein's work for the CIA. His one act play "Play On Words or the War Will Be Over Soon" was selected by Edward Albee's Playwrights Unit to be performed under the direction of John Lithgow and he is an alumnus of The Lark. He is a contributing editor of "The American Conservative" and a columnist for Lewrockwell.com. Cummings is also a contributor to the Underground Alliance's Special Reports which published his article, "The Fiction of the State". He is a member of PEN America Center and the Authors League, and the Deadkube Club, which is housed in the National Arts Club. A poet, his work has appeared in numerous publications. Educated at Princeton, where he won the Buchanan Prize in Politics, and Columbia Law School, where is was on the Law Review and was a Kent Scholar, he also holds an M. Litt and the Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge, where he taught Jurisprudence at St. Catherine's College and was at Jesus College. While at Cambridge, he was a member of the Pitt Club. Richard Cummings also edited Max Lerner's "Nine Scorpions In a Bottle", for which he wrote the introduction.

He also wrote "The Immortalists", a novel, and the thriller "The Prince Must Die" under his pen name, Gower Leconfield. His column "Politics In Perspective" ran in the "East Hampton Star" for seven years. He taught at the Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa and served as the Editor of the Journal of Ethiopian Law, and the University of the West Indies in Barbados. He has also served as legal advisor for environmental affairs to Assemblyman Perry Duryea, Speaker of the New York State Assembly and later, Minority Leader, and as Director of Natural Resources for the Town of East Hampton, was a founder of The Group for America's South Fork, and authored the Suffolk County Farmland Preservation Law.

While a professor at the University of Louisville School of Law, he served as a legal advisor to the Rev. A.D. Williams King, Martin Luther King's brother. He was a delegate to the Democratic convention that nominated George McGovern, serving on the Credentials Committee as well. He was a Democratic candidate for the Suffolk County legislature. He is married to the writer Mary Cummings, and is the father of the filmmakers, Benjamin and Orson Cummings. See Whose Who in America, Whose Who in American Law.
