Bishop Shanahan High School is located in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Catholic school system. Named after Right Rev. John W. Shanahan, the third bishop of Harrisburg, the school is currently the only Archdiocesan High School in Chester County. Construction of the current building began in 1996, was opened in 1998, and the first class graduated from it in 1999. The school had previously been located in West Chester. In June 2008, Bishop Shanahan celebrated its 50 year anniversary with the graduation of its 50th Senior Class.

School Seal and Motto

The school seal is a shield separated into thirds, emblazoned with a cross (Faith), an anchor (Hope), and a heart (Love): the three Theological Virtues. Beneath the school shield is the motto "Quae sursum sunt Quaerite." which means "Seek the things that are above."

Academics

Bishop Shanahan has the highest graduation rate in Chester County.

Sports

Bishop Shanahan High School Athletics are headed by Coach (Edward) Torrence. The school's track and field team is well known in the ChesMont league for excellent competition. Bishop Shanahan is also one of the few schools in Pennsylvania which offer an excellent Rugby team, which has won international tourneys in France, Scotland, Belgium, and the Cayman Islands. The have won championships in some sports from 2003-2007.Local Rival Schools include: Downingtown East, Downingtown West, Coatesville Area High School, West Chester East, and B. Reed Henderson High School.

Alumni

A number of people who have graduated from Bishop Shanahan have gone on to do great things.One such person is Matthew McGrory, member of the class of 1990 and a celebrated actor in such films as The Devil's Rejects, Bubble Boy, and Big Fish.
