Margrave Luitpold of Bavaria built up his army and attempted to score a decisive victory against the Magyars, who threatened many countries inCentral Europe . The European army included more than 100 000 soldiers.Árpád 's army the Hungarian was only around 30-35 000. The Bavarian army, consisting of three battle groups, was crushed below Pressburg Castle (Pozsony Castle), and a large part of Luitpold's army was destroyed. After the Battle, the Magyars occupied present-day eastern
Austria up to the RiverEnns , began pillaging the surrounding regions, and destroyedGreat Moravia which had already been plagued by inner instability. The Magyar threat persisted until 955 whenOtto I the Great won a decisive victory at theBattle of Lechfeld , which brought internal stability toGerman lands.
