Strathearn School

Strathearn is a voluntary, all-girls grammar school in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Strathearn is a grammar school situated in East Belfast, Northern Ireland, attended by about 750 girls aged 11-18. The staff and the Board of Governors work together to make Strathearn a community where each individual can belong, be happy, valued and secure.The grounds include sports facilities and pitches for hockey and athletics as well as many mature trees. These surround the front lawn and provide a pleasant physical environment for the work of the school. The sports hall has facilities for many activities such as gymnastics, badminton, 5-a-side soccer and basketball. Every year, a Sports Captain and two vice-captains(Upper sixth) are elected.

The Preparatory Department 'Penrhyn' is a few hundred yards from the main school, attended by about 140 girls aged 4-11.

History

In 1864 17 acres of land was bought by Mr William Mullan and Mr Robert Mullan. and Strathearn House was built. in 1904 Mr William Mullan sold the house to Alexander Taylor, who died in October 1928. The house was then sold to Victoria College, in Belfast.The School was opened in 1929. The Classics teacher Miss Miskelly at Victoria College became the first headmistress.In 1952 Penrhyn House was bought and converted into a preparatory department. In 1987 the House beside was also purchased and served as another school building.

*1979-1997 Miss Lamb, who built the Sixth form centre, Music department and Sports Hall.
*1997 Mr Manning, the current Headmaster.

The school is divided into four houses:
*Barbour(yellow)
*Boucher(blue)
*McCaughey(green)
*Watts(red)Each house was named after a school governor, introduced by Miss Rodden in 1944. Inter-house sports competitions and house plays are held annually. A Captain and two vice-captains(Upper sixth) run each house.

*Hockey skirt (emblazoned with school badge)
*Hockey knee high socks(blue)

As of April 1 each Spring, Upper Sixth may wear their own clothes.

The school day

Registration begins at 8.45 am, then Assembly on Mondays and Wednesdays (Juniors), Tuesdays and Fridays (Seniors). Classes begin at 9.05 am, consisting of 9 periods (35 minutes) throughout the day. Morning break lasts 15 minutes. Lunch lasts 50 minutes. Sixth form are permitted to leave the grounds during lunch.

*Lucy Caldwell Playwright and author.
*Melanie Nocher Olympic Swimmer competed at 2008 Beijing Olympics and broke Irish record in 200m backstroke heat (2:12.29)
