Indian general election, 1984

Indian general election, 1984

General elections were held in India in 1984 soon after the assassination of previous Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, though the vote in Assam and Punjab was delayed until 1985 due to ongoing fighting.

The election was won convincingly by Rajiv Gandhi's (son of Indira) Indian National Congress, who claimed 414 seats, and a majority of 295 in the 533-seat parliament.

Turnout was 63.56% in the main elections and 61.95% in the delayed elections.
