The Telltale Head

The Telltale Head

] Bart awakening and finding the head of Jebediah Springfield in bed next to him is a reference to the famous scene in "The Godfather" where Jack Woltz, a Jewish movie producer, finds the head of his prize racehorse next to him one morning.

This is the first episode of the series in which Reverend Timothy Lovejoy, Krusty the Clown, Sideshow Bob, Jimbo Jones, Kearney Zzyzwicz, Dolphin "Dolph" Starbeam, Ms. Albright, and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon appear.

Reception

Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood, said they enjoyed: "the Simpsons [being] grossly dysfunctional in church, Homer dispensing terrible advice, and a real moral dilemma for Bart." In a DVD review of the first season, David B. Grelck gave the episode a rating of 3/5 and added that "This is a strange episode, touching on many bizarre aspects of the show to come". This episode has been referenced twice in the television series "South Park." In "Simpsons Already Did It", Butters cuts the head off a statue in South Park to wreak havoc on society, but is foiled when he realizes that, not only have "The Simpsons" already done this, but the townspeople would prefer to leave the statue headless in order to be reminded of the cartoon. When Cartman asks Bart what the worst thing he's ever done is, Bart replies "I cut the head off a statue once".
