File grooming

File grooming, in the context of computer file systems, is the act of rearranging files. Commonly, this is moving files to directories with names reflecting their contents.

This act can also refer to the deletion of no longer relevant files, previous versions of programs or backup archives, temporary files and defragmentation. This has the effect of freeing up disk space and improving disk performance.

Methodology

Many different means of file structure exist, and without a set standard for any platform, many of them are used in mainstream computing. Dot separation, popularized mainly by Linux and Unix operating systems, involves separating relevant information about a file with a period. For example, 24.S06E01.DVDRip.XviD.avi means that this file is a DVD rip of episode 1 of season 6 of the show 24 using the Xvid codec. This is an expansion of a file extension, which is normally placed after a period on the end of a file.
