Lakewood School District was established in 1958, with the opening of the new Lakewood School, the soon to be Lakewood Elementary. In 1972, Lakewood School became Lakewood Elementary and Grades 6 and up moved to the new Lakewood Middle School (then called Lakewood High School). In 1982, Lakewood got its own high school, Lakewood High School, so the former Lakewood High School became Lakewood Junior High School, and then Lakewood Middle School. After the completion of a full school district, Lakewood Elementary became overcrowded, so in 1995,
English Crossing Elementary opened a few yards away, serving only Grades 3-5, leaving Lakewood Elementary with K-2. In 2003,Cougar Creek Elementary was completed, and became the only traditional K-5 school in the district.chools
