Overview

The St. Michael's Secondary School is a dual session secondary school located in the city of Sandakan, state of Sabah, East Malaysia. It is located at the foot of Elton Hill which is at the hub of the city on the Churches Road. The school was established in October 5, 1888, which is one of the oldest school in Sandakan.

History

St. Michael's Secondary School is a part of the Anglican Diocese of Sabah. The development of Anglican Church schools was inspired by foreign settlers to provide education to their children.

St. Michael's has its origin in the year 1888, it was founded by the late Rev. William Henry Elton. At first, there were just only 2 students in the school and had lasted for 2 months. At the same time, both students are teaching Rev. William Henry Elton Malay language and Chinese language. In exchange, Rev. William Henry Elton taught them English. Starting from the third month, the amount of the student has increased.St. Michael's had managed to past through Elton Era, First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945) and until now, she still standing on the top of the Elton Hill. After the world war, St. Michael has collapsed, but the school had been rebuilt using donation from people around the district.Throughout the time, St. Michael's is divided into 2 sections. The new building consists of 5 floors including washroom, staffroom, science laboratories, IT lab, library and classrooms. Other part of the school includes classrooms, Canteen A and surau (a small place of worship for Muslims). Canteen B is located in front of the Canteen A. Between the 2 buildings, there is an open place for outdoor activities. In addition, there is the Elton Square on the ground floor of the new building.

Elton Square

Located on the crest of Elton Hill, next to the World's Heritage, the oldest Stone Structure in Malaysia, St. Michael & All Angels' Church.It compounds 2 individual academic buildings & a small cafeteria.One of the academic building is a 2-storey wooden building consists of classrooms, a hall, a cafeteria & a utility room.Another academic building is a 6-storey concrete building leaning on the crest of Elton Hill. It consists of 4 laboratories, the staffs' office, the principal's office, a library, an auditorium, 2 workshops, a kitchen, an art centre, a dental clinic, a bookstore, a sport store & etc.
