North American area code 213 is a California telephone area code which was one of the first three area codes created in California in October 1947. It originally contained all of Southern California and was generally associated with Los Angeles.

Over the years it has been subdivided a number of times and is now completely surrounded by the 323 area code, it contains only downtown Los Angeles and its immediate environs. The subdivisions to date have been:
*area code 714 (a flash-cut sometime during 1951)
*area code 805 (a flash-cut sometime during 1957)
*area code 619 (split from 714 on November 5 ,1982)
*area code 818 (January 7 ,1984)
*area code 310 (November 2, 1991)
*area code 909 (split from 714 on November 14 ,1992)
*area code 562 (split from 310 on January 25 ,1997)
*area code 760 (split from 619 on March 22 ,1997)
*area code 626 (split from 818 on June 14 ,1997)
*area code 949 (split from 714 on April 18 ,1998)
*area code 323 (June 13 ,1998)
*area code 661 (split from 805 on February 13 ,1999)
*area code 858 (split from 619 on June 12 ,1999)
*area code 951 (split from 909 on July 17 ,2004)
*area code 424 (overlay of 310 created on August 26 ,2006)
*area code 657 (overlay of 714 created on September 20 ,2007)

This area code includes East Compton, part of Los Angeles, and Willowbrook.

Trivia

* In 1947 when area codes were first assigned, all the telephones were rotary phones that used pulse dialing. New York City received the only 5 pulse area code (212), and the Chicago and Los Angeles areas got the only 6 pulse area codes (312 and 213 respectively).

* By area, it is one of the smallest area codes in North America.

* American rap group 213 is named after the area code, from when it was the area code of Long Beach.

* Singer Whitney Houston mentions the area code in her song "It's Not Right But It's Okay", "You said it was one of your friends down on 54th street, boy / So why did 213 show up on your caller ID."

* Rapper Dr. Dre mentions the area code in his song "Still D.R.E.", "Still got love for the streets reppin' 213."

* In their 2006 song "That's that" R.Kelly and Snoop Dogg are inviting all girls to call them "Girl if you ever in the 312 /// And if you're ever in the 213"
