- Harlow Wilcox
:"Harlow Wilcox, also known by the nickname "Waxy" was also the name of a radio announcer for
Fibber McGee and Molly ."Harlow Wilcox (died August 26, 2002) was an American country session
guitarist from Norman,Oklahoma . In 1969 he released aninstrumental single onPlantation Records (as Harlow Wilcox & the Oakies) called "Groovy Grubworm", which hit #30 on the U.S. "Billboard" Hot 100 chart late that year. [Joel Whitburn , "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits". 7th edn, 2000] Twoalbum s followed. "Groovy Grubworm" has sold over a million copies and was nominated for a Grammy in 1969. On August 26,2 002 Harlow passed away from a heart attack at his home inOklahoma City ."Groovy Grubworm" represents the biggest variation between the "Billboard" and "
Cash Box " Country charts. Because of the two charts measured and weighted differently the various aspects of song popularity (sales, airplay, jukebox play), on rare occasions there were some major differences. "Billboard" apparently regarded the song as a rock record as it only reached #42 on the Country chart but, as noted above, "Billboard" placed it at #30 on the Pop chart (it was also huge inCanada , being a top 10 Pop record). Meanwhile, "Cash Box" regarded the record as a Country record, and it reached #1 for two weeks according to "Cash Box". The record reached Billboard's Easy Listening Top 40.Discography
