Thompson coupling

Thompson coupling

The Thompson coupling is a type of universal joint that, unlike traditional universal joints, has true constant velocity between the drive and driven shaft. It consists essentially of two universal joints assembled coaxially and therefore also incorporates an advantage of the universal joint, no load bearing sliding surfaces. The Thompson coupling is the first constant-velocity coupling to have this property.cite web | url = http://orange.yourguide.com.au/detail.asp?class=news&subclass=general&story_id=499193&category=General&m=8&y=2006 | title = An invention to drive fuel costs down | publisher = yourguide.com.au | last = Bowman | first = Rebecca| date = 2006-08-03 | accessdate = 2007-02-13 | archiveurl = http://www.webcitation.org/5McLzBuI5 | archivedate = 2007-02-13] The elimination of sliding surfaces is claimed to reduce energy losses, and improve longevity compared to constant-velocity joints. According to its inventor, Glenn Thompson, the coupling uses about 8 per cent less energy than an equivalent system.cite news | url = http://www.abc.net.au/rural/content/2006/s1717093.htm | accessdate = 2007-02-14 | date = 2006-08-17 | title = Improving drive shafts | last = Reynolds | first = Bruce | work = ABC Rural | publisher = Australian Broadcasting Corporation]

The coupling has earned its inventor the Australian Society for Engineering in Agriculture Engineering Award.cite web | url = http://orange.yourguide.com.au/detail.asp?class=news&subclass=local&category=general%20news&story_id=267125&y=2003&m=11 | title = Invention generating interest | publisher = yourguide.com.au | last = Filmer | first = Mark | date = 2003-11-13 | accessdate = 2007-02-13 | archiveurl = http://www.webcitation.org/5McLQ7oih | archivedate = 2007-02-13]
