Just as berries can be red, blue, yellow, black and almost any other colour, this paper was created to be accessible to students of all political beliefs. [CUSU Societies Directory, Cambridge University Students' Union, Cambridge, 2006. Also accessed at http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/societies/directory/berry/ on
21 January 2007 .] Originally a joint project between CULC and CUCA it expanded to include contributors from all political pursuasions. It aims to remain unbiased, while removing the anti-political slant so much of the modern media holds. It also publishes a central calendar pull-out which aims to act as a definitive diary of debates, speaker meetings and other political events for its readers. It offers all Cambridge's political societies an opportunity to use this at no cost.
History
The paper was launched by Laurie Fitzjohn-Sykes, then chairman of CUCA, in order to challenge the political apathy that was prevalent amongst the university's students. Whilst originally drawing writers from CULC and CUCA, it soon diversified to include contributors who were members of the other political parties and those who were members of none at all.
Previous contributors include: Jereon Van De Veer (CEO of Shell), Mark Lloyd-Davis (Conservative Party Health Advisor) and
Tony Benn (former Labour MP). [The Berry, Volume 1, Issue 1, October 2005.]Organisation
"The Berry" is published entirely by a team of volunteers, who are students at Cambridge University. It is completely funded by advertisements and donations. It is currently printed by
Archant . [Archant website. Accessed at http://www.archantprint.co.uk/portfolio_examples.htm on22 January 2007 .]External links
