Singapore Popularity Contests

Since 2004, major popularity-cum-performance contests were held and aired on television. This is a list of popularity contests.

2004

Singapore Idol Season 1 (2004)

The Singaporean version of the singing contest American Idol, Singapore Idol has the same gameplay and crowns the winner Taufik Batisah, who has released two albums.

2005

Star Idol (2005-06)

The acting contest replaces the original Star Search organisation. Star Idol garners the most amount of viewers among all major popularity contests of 2006.

SuperHost (2005-06)

Singapore expands talent searching to find the best hosts of the country.

Champion : Lin Cui Fang (has hosted several variety shows)

1st-Runner Up : Li Teng (has hosted several variety shows)

Project SuperStar Season 1 (2005)

This contest is a Chinese version of the English Singapore Idol, but with different rules. Males are separated from females to compete against one another before each winner meets each other at the grand finals.

2006

Singapore Idol Season 2 (2006)

The quest continues with this major contest. The response during the auditions were overwhelming and this contest released two personal magazines regarding the Top 12.

Campus SuperStar Season 1 (2006)

The first major popularity performance contest to have teenage contestants in Campus SuperStar, the school version of Project SuperStar. The only differences are of the grand finals were 4 contestants compete instead of 2.

Champion : Ng Chee Yang (has contributed to 1 compilation)

Project SuperStar Season 2 (2006-07)

The competition is back with the second season after grooming a total of 4 celebrities out of alumni of the first season.

SuperBand (2006)

Music can be performed by more than one artiste, and SuperBand is held to find the best band there could be.

The Dance Floor (2007)

The Dance Floor pits groups of dancers in the dance floor dancing, while only 1 will named as official champion

imilarities and Differences

Commonly, all contests have the contestants performing (a song, a drama act, a hosting procedure etc.), then promoting their vote number for audiences and fans to dial.

Announcement of Results

Usually, the results of the shows are announced later on the same night of broadcast. Results for Singapore Idol are announced 24 hours later, whereas for Project SuperStar, the results are announced on the 2nd night for each week's broadcast.
