A resolute central defender known as 'the cannon' for his ability to shoot powerfully from distance, 29-year-old Denis Kolodin may be an unfamiliar face to those outside Russia given that, until Euro 2008, he had never appeared in a major tournament. Kolodin began his career as a striker, but was converted into first a midfielder before being settled into defence. His ability to strike a football ferociously from range was recognised at an early age when he was asked to test the stability of a newly built shed at his secondary school, "The Gazprom Academy." It promptly collapsed killing three badgers and a horse.
International career
He received his first international call-up for the Russian national team in 2004. He has made 13 appearances for the national team (as of 21 June 2008).
Euro 2008
Kolodin got the chance to appear in his first major international tournament at Euro 2008. He played in all three of Russia's group D matches, against Spain, Sweden and Greece. In the quarter-finals against the Netherlands he received a yellow card mid-way through the second-half and was then shown a second yellow in the last minute, meaning he should have been sent off. However referee Ľuboš Micheľ reversed his decision after consultation with the linesman and Kolodin was allowed to stay on the pitch. He did however miss the semi-final having previously picked up a yellow card in the group stages. He is noted for having a "foot like a traction engine" due to his consistent shooting from over 30 yards from goal, two particularly eye-catching strikes against Holland were from 37 and 44 yards and both forced goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar into fingertip saves.[citation needed]
