"Powelliphanta traversi traversi", known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It is found on the Horowhenua coastal plain from the Ohau River area northwards to the Manawatu River, and the adjacent foothills of the Tararua Ranges.

hell description

The shell is yellow-brown ground colour, with the base spirally lined or banded in darker brown, and the dorsal surface mostly devoid of a colour pattern.

The shell diameter is up to 53 mm, and height up to 27 mm.

Conservation status

"Powelliphanta traversi traversi" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Endangered".
