"Powelliphanta traversi tararuaensis", known as one of the amber snails, is a subspecies of large, carnivorous land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Rhytididae.

Distribution

This subspecies is endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It is found only at Kaihinu, north east of Shannon.

hell description

The main shell coloration is greenish-olive, tinged with russet-brown on the dorsal surface, and finely spirally lined in pale brown, but with a few more distinct lines about the periphery.

The shell diameter is up to 53 mm, and height up to 27 mm.

Conservation status

"Powelliphanta traversi tararuaensis" is classified by the New Zealand Department of Conservation as being "Nationally Endangered".
