Geography of Gothenburg

The city of Gothenburg is situated on the western coast by Kattegat, an arm of the North Sea, at the outlet of the river Göta älv and the Göta Canal. Due to the Gulf Stream the city has a mild climate and quite a lot of rain. The archipelago of Gothenburg consists of rough, barren rocks and cliffs, which also is typical for the coast of Bohuslän.

Metropolitan Area

The Gothenburg Metropolitan Area ("Stor-Göteborg") has 816,931 inhabitants and consists of the following municipalities in Västra Götaland County: Ale, Gothenburg, Härryda, Kungälv, Lerum, Mölndal, Partille, Stenungsund, Tjörn, Öckeröand in Halland County: Kungsbacka.

Gothenburg urban area ("Göteborgs tätort" in Swedish) had 495 849 inhabitants in the 2000 census.
