Prête-moi ta main

"Prête-moi ta main" or "Rent a Wife" (international working title) or "I Do" (its Australian and UK release title), is a 2006 French romantic comedy directed by Eric Lartigau, based on an original idea by Alain Chabat. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alain Chabat and Bernadette Lafont.

Plot summary

Luis (Alain Chabat), 43, happily single, mollycoddled by his family (mum and 5 sisters, known as the "G7"), has a successful career and an easy life. Tired of taking care of him, the G7 decide he should get married within a year. The problem is Luis doesn't want any kind of serious relationship since they ruined his first true love. After turning down all the girls introduced to him, he gets an idea: "rent" his best friend's sister, Emma (Charlotte Gainsbourg), turn her into the perfect bride-to-be, and make her not show up on their wedding day. That way, Luis thinks his family will leave him alone. Unfortunately for him, things won't go as planned...

Box office & Reaction

Released on Nov 1st in France, the film went straight to #1 at the box office, grossing over a million tickets ("Note: in France, box office is based on the number of tickets sold"). As of Dec 19, the film has reached the 3 million tickets sold mark, making one of the highest scores for a French film in 2006.

Overall, the movie got extremely positive reviews, and was often described as "the best comedy of the year".

Trivia

* This is Alain Chabat and Charlotte Gainsbourg 3rd collaboration, after "Ils se marièrent et eurent beaucoup d'enfants" (2004) and "The Science of Sleep" (2006).A five-minute fight sequence in the film hit Tamil film "Muthu" was featured in this movie.
* In Russia, film's title is "Как жениться и остаться холостым" (How to marry and stay single). Film's Armenian title is Russian one's translation ("Ինչպես ամուսնանալ և ամուրի մնալ").
