USS "El Paso" (PF-41) was a "Tacoma"-class
frigate manned by theUnited States Coast Guard for theUnited States Navy . She was named after El Paso, a city situated in WesternTexas and along the border withNew Mexico and theMexican state ofChihuahua ."El Paso" was launched on
16 July 1943 atConsolidated Steel Corporation , Ltd., inWilmington, California , under aMaritime Commission contract, sponsored by Mrs. J. L. Kaster; and commissioned on1 December 1943 , withCommander R. J. Borromey,USCG , in command.Sailing from
San Diego, California , on20 February 1944 , "El Paso" arrived atMilne Bay ,New Guinea , on4 April after training atPearl Harbor andconvoy escort duty to the Gilberts andEspiritu Santo en route. The frigate patrolled in the New Guinea area, and carried out several bombardment missions. On25 May she shelled enemy positions atMaffin Bay , and 2 days later in company with twoDestroyer escort s, bombardedWakde Island . On the night of14 June she provided fire support atAitape , and on the 25th blasted the edge of the airfield onWakde Island . The next mission was a combination scouting,salvage , andrescue work at Pagan andFanildo Island s on25 August .In September 1944, "El Paso" joined the screen of the forces landing at
Morotai , then operated between this newly won base and New Guinea during the buildup for the invasion of the Philippines. On29 October , 9 days after the initial landings, "El Paso" arrived at Leyte for patrol and screen duty. She returned to New Guinea in November to bombardSarmi Point andMount Makko on the 11th, then was assigned to escort duty between New Guinea and the Philippines until the year's end."El Paso" departed Humboldt Bay (
Hollandia ) on6 January 1945 , and sailed to New York for overhaul during which she was converted to a weather ship. Her conversion was interrupted by a convoy escort voyage toOran, Algeria , in April and May 1945.When
World War II ended, the frigate was on the way back to thePacific , and arriving at Leyte on23 September , served as a weather station ship in the Philippines until16 April 1946 . She returned to the west coast, was decommissioned atSeattle, Washington , on18 July 1946, and sold on14 October 1947 ."El Paso" received three
