George Thomas (soldier)

George Thomas (born Roscrea, Tipperary, c1756, died Barhampur, India, August 22 1802) was an Irish mercenary who was active in 18th century India. He was known as the Irish Raja.

Thomas deserted his ship and took up employment with Indian chieftains. Later he raised a band of horsemen and set up a kingdom of his own with its headquarters at Hansi in north India, where he built a fort named after him as "George Ghar".
