Early life and career

Sheppard grew up in Twyford, Berkshire, and attended comprehensive school in Wargrave.[2] At 16 he became a regular correspondent on BBC Radio 2's Wake Up to Wogan – under the guise of the "Assistant to the Director General", his writings appeared daily for the next eight years.[3]

He read English at Bristol University, where he ran the student radio station (Burst Radio) and presented the breakfast show.[4]

Sheppard joined the BBC in 2002, appearing on BBC Radio Berkshire during university holidays, and working on the regional evening radio show (fronted by Richard L Lewis[5]) at BBC Radio Bristol. He later took a full time post at BBC Radio Berkshire, and also popped up regularly as a presenter on BBC Oxford, BBC Radio Solent and the BBC South late show.[6] He moved to BBC Radio Devon in November 2008.

Other appearances

Sheppard is also heard as a voiceover on several radio stations up and down the country, and occasionally on television trails. He is the current voice of 'Nihal's Guide to the World Wide Web' on BBC Radio 1.

He starred as the invisible compere for Timmy Mallett's UK tour in 2005, and took the smallest of cameo roles in BBC2's Top Gear in 2006 – as a reporter on Richard Hammond's radio. His love of coffee was documented in a BBC2 television documentary, The Truth About Food, shown early in 2007.[7]

Personal life

Sheppard lives in Plymouth, Devon,[8] and is the co-owner of a Routemaster (one of London's famous red buses) with Ken Bruce, Alan Dedicoat, Charles Nove and Steve Madden.[9]

He co-authors the Guardian award nominated weblog Dayorama, and is an active member of CAMRA.
