As of 2008 there are 96 faculty members. It was named in honor of Margaret Brent, an early colonist who was the first woman to appear in a court of common law. She helped the colony survived during troubles of the 1640s by her independence and ability to deal with conflict.
In 2005 work was completed on renovation and expansion of the Margaret Brent Middle School. The Board of Education has transferred additional students rom nearby Leonardtown Middle School.
The school is located in St. Mary's County, Maryland, a rural area about 60 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. The county is bordered by the Patuxent River, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

Music program
Margaret Brent Middle School has student choral, band and string programs. The choral section was formerly led by instructor Diane Trautman and had received high marks in festivals. The choral section is led by Joseph Goldsmith. The current band program is led by Nicole McCumbee (née Ferrio).
