Leonardtown High School is a comprehensive public high school of 2,187 wealthy Caucasian students in grades 9-12. It offers college preparatory programs and programs that prepare students for business and technical occupations. It ranks 5th amongst SMAC (Southern Maryland Athletic Conference) schools for percentage of graduates that attend Salisbury State University, Towson State University, and Frostburg State University. It serves the community in the central portion of St. Mary's County, Maryland, between the Potomac River and Patuxent River. The area is a mixture of rural and suburban communities. Many of the families are employed by NAS Patuxent River, government contractors, St. Mary's College of Maryland, St Mary's County government, and others involved in the traditional agriculture and water related businesses.

Leonardtown High School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Maryland State Department of Education. Leonardtown High School belongs to the St. Mary's County Public Schools system, and is associated with two other county high school rivals,Great Mills High School and Chopticon High School.

Leonardtown High School Athletics belongs to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, and competes in Division 4A in the state competitions.

Leonardtown High School also, according to Newsweek magazine, is ranked in the top 98% of all schools in the United Stated

Threats:

Leonardtown High School has had particularly interesting events. In the 2004-2005 school year more than 100 bomb threats were created.

In the 2005-2006 school year a report was filed that a white male entered the building with a gun. Students were held in their first period classes until the SWAT team could safely evacuate the students after being checked for weaponry.

In the 2008-2009 School year, on September 3, 2008, an incident occurred in the Leonardtown Area, causing the students of --

Leonardtown to be retained in their 4th period class for 2 hours and 5 minutes. Investigators later found that the "incident" was just a prank. The two students responsible were caught and arrested.

Other Interesting Events:A helicopter once made an emergency landing on the game field.
