T. N. Kaul

T. N. Kaul (1913-2000) has been one of India's foremost diplomats and strategic studies experts.

Born in 1913 in Baramulla, Kashmir, and educated at the universities of Punjab, Allahabad and London, he had an illustrious career in the Indian Foreign Service, which he joined in 1936. He has rendered highly distinguished service to the Government of India as an Ambassador to the erstwhile Soviet Union, U.S., China, Iran, Deputy High Commissioner to the UK, and later as Foreign Secretary to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. He was also the Vice-Chairman of the Indian unit of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Chairman of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR).

Besides his diplomatic career, he has also been a much sought after foreign policy expert, and has lectured widely on international peace and security issues at various universities all over the world. During his lifetime, he has been almost an authority figure in India in Chinese, American, Pakistani, and Indian foreign policy related issues.

He has also authored a number of books. Some of the books authored by him were:

* Life in a Himalayan Hamlet (1982)
* My Years through Raj and Swaraj (1993)
* A Diplomat’s Diary (1947-1999) (2000)

He breathed his last in 2000 at his Shimla residence at the age of 87.
