Next album = "" (1970)"From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis" is the thirty-fifth album, not counting budget compilations on the
RCA Camden subsidiary, byElvis Presley , released onRCA Records , LSP 6020, in November 1969. The set was issued to capitalize upon the success of Presley's previous album, "From Elvis in Memphis ", and also to tie-in with his newfound success as a headliner in Las Vegas. It is Presley's firstdouble album , and it peaked at #12 on theBillboard 200 .Contents
The first album carried the title Elvis In Person at the International Hotel and consisted of live performances taped at the International Hotel in August 1969, during Presley's return to live performance after a layoff of eight years since a benefit concert in
Hawaii in March 1961. [Jorgensen, Ernst. Elvis Presley, A Life In Music. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1998;ISBN 0-312-18572-3 , p. 154] It was the first live album ever released by Presley, and the inaugural engagement of the group that would come to be known as theTCB Band in the 1970s, withLarry Muhoberac on piano in place of TCB regular Glen D. Hardin. The second album carried the title Back In Memphis, and consisted of material recorded from the sessions at
American Studios in Memphis not already released on "From Elvis in Memphis". Two songs, "The Fair's Is Moving On " and "You'll Think of Me " had previously appeared respectively as theb-side s to the singles "Clean Up Your Own Backyard " and "Suspicious Minds " earlier in the year. Being leftovers and not including either "Suspicious Minds" or two additional tracks held for future singles, "Don't Cry Daddy " and "Kentucky Rain ," the album lacked the impact of the its predecessor, with only the track "Stranger In My Hometown " equaling the intensity of the already issued songs. [Ibid. p. 289]In November 1970, RCA reissued the double LP as individual albums each identified by their original subtitles, LSP 4428 and LSP 4429, and it is currently out of print in its original format. The studio tracks from Back In Memphis can be found on either the 1960s or the "Suspicious Minds" double-disc retrospective of Presley's winter 1969 Memphis sessions. Elvis In Person at the International Hotel is also out of print, although the complete show from
August 24 , 1969, which provided three songs for this album, can be found on disc one of the 2001box set "Live In Las Vegas ".Personnel
