The 18th Congressional District of Illinois covers central and western Illinois, including the cities of Jacksonville, Peoria, and Springfield. It has been represented by Ray LaHood since 1995.

In 2006 LaHood beat veteran Steve Waterworth [http://www.waterworthforcongress.com/] by a margin of 147,108 (67%) to 71,106 (33%) [http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/states/IL/H/18/district.html] .

LaHood decided not to seek re-election in 2008. State Representative Aaron Schock of Peoria will attempt to hold the seat for the Republicans in the Nov. 4 election. His main opponent is Democrat Colleen Callahan, of Kickapoo, who has been a radio and television broadcaster. Green Party candidate and educator Sheldon Schafer, of Peoria, is also on the ballot.
