Shelby County High school, part of the Shelby County Public Schools system, is located in Shelbyville approximately 30 miles east of Louisville, and has a student body of about 1700 students serving grades 9-12.http://www.shelby.kyschools.us/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=182&Itemid=123]
The school conducts Advanced Placement and Honors classes in addition to dual credit courses with
Jefferson Community College . Shelby County High School is accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school has an average ACT composite score of 21.5 and SAT average of 1100.http://www.shelby.kyschools.us/SCHS/index.htm]Classes work on a block schedule format in which students attend four 86-minute classes per day per semester. ] The students of the school have a variety of classes from which to choose. The classes range all the way from psychology to a Junior ROTC program. The Students are required to have 27 credits to graduate.
Do to the stabbing of a student by another student in th 06-07 year, and a student beating another student over the head with a mallet because of a feud outside of school in the 04-05 year the security of the school has been raised by having local police officers patrol the schools, random drug searchs, and cameras through out the schools stairwells and parking lots to protect the students from any more problems such as those, and as of the 08-09 year hiring a state police officer as the head principal. There were also reports of a teacher making sexual comments about a group of freshmen students in the 06-07 year. In the 05-06 year a member of the local Ku Klux Klan group marched outside the school in protest of a muslim senior who was complaining about the prayer service that the school has every year during graduation.
Shelby County High School's
mascot is the Rocket, and the colors are navy blue and gold. The rocket was chosen because of the Space Age in which the school was founded. ]External links
