Martha Layne Collins High School is located in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The official name is Martha Layne Collins Hill High School. One of two high schools in the Shelby County Public Schools school district, it opened in August 2010. Ralph Anthony Hatchell has been selected as the first principal.[1][2]

The school is named for Martha Layne Collins, the first female governor of Kentucky.[3] A native of Bagdad in Shelby County, Martha Layne Hall graduated from Shelbyville High School and the University of Kentucky, after marrying Dr. Bill Collins and serving as a school teacher until 1970. Martha Layne Collins became the first female Governor of the Commonwealth 1983-1987, accomplishing successful endeavors in education reform and economic development. After her term as Governor, Collins served in various educational-based roles. Since 1998, she has been Executive Scholar-in-Residence at Georgetown College.[4]

It is unusual among U.S. high schools in being a 5-year school, housing grades 8 to 12. Most high schools in Kentucky (and nationwide) house grades 9 to 12. Grades 8 and 9 occupy the second floor, with grades 10 through 12 on the first floor. The facilities are located on a 110-acre (44.5 ha) property that is consistently criticized for not being maintained.
