He is currently the creative director of Shackman Events, a management and event company inNew York City ; and artistic director of the nonprofit Nantucket-based theater group On The Isle. Schmehl attended
Emerson College . He started his show business career working with the national touring companies of musicals "Sugar Babies " starringCarol Channing , "Annie ", "A Chorus Line " and "Woman of the Year" starringLauren Bacall .Schmehl began a twenty-year association with composer
Charles Strouse when he directed Strouse's opera "Nightingale" in Boston. Schmehl had a six-month run with the Broadway production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat " and one year as audition choreographer for the show's national tour. He was also stage manager and casting director for theOff-Broadway musical "When Pigs Fly".His most recent theatre credits include director and choreographer of the off-Broadway play "Almost Live from the Betty Ford Clinic", and part of the producing team for
Radio City Music Hall 's Christmas show. Schmehl has assisted Broadway director and choreographerGillian Lynne -- choreographer of "Cats", "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" -- on new productions in New York,San Diego ,London andVienna .Schmehl's directing and choreography credits include THE BAD BOY CLUB (Key West Theatre Festival), ROCKWELL (Maine Center for the Performing Arts), THE ALUMINUM GARDEN (Off-Broadway), IT’S ALL IN THE BOOK (Boston’s Wang Center), HELLO DOLLY (Center Stage), TAMPA II (Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center), VINCENTENNIAL (Boston’s Majestic Theatre), FOLLIES (Bangor Opera House), benefits for The American Cancer Society (Charleston’s Galliard Theatre), United Cerebral Palsy (Tulsa’s Brady Theatre) and Good Samaritan’s BOB HOPE AWARDS to name a few. The musical MAGIC ME based on the charity with the same name gave Carl the opportunity to work with most of Broadway’s greatest composers and lyricists, include legends such as Kander & Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Jule Styne, Cy Coleman, Sheldon Harnick and Comden & Green to name a few.

Carl working in the event industry has created some of New York’s biggest events and Industrial’s including: The Spiderman DVD release Party, The Panasonic International Awards, Prudential At the Plaza with Neil Sedaka, Outward Bound, Hershey, Frank Sinatra’s 75th Birthday Tour, opening nights of Broadways GYPSY, the movies ONCE AROUND with Holly Hunter and HAVANA with Robert Redford. Tivo, Universal Studios, Yahoo! Dr. Pepper, New York Life, CNN, NBC, Hilton, Fox, MTV, Leading hotels of the World/Relais & Chateaux, Recently, Google, AMEX, Carl was appointed Creative Director of Shackman Events, a division of Shackman Associates, a destination management and event company in NY.
Film and other credits
Schmehl has had several cameo roles in Hollywood films. He was hit by a taxicab in the film "
Ghostbusters ", punched out in the film "Heart" with Brad Davis, and turned down for a date byMolly Ringwald in "The Pick-up Artist". He has also performed for theDesert Storm troops at McDill Air Force Base, is listed in "Who's Who in Entertainment", and was recently featured in an article "hot shots" in the "New York Daily News ".External links
