2022 Winter Olympics

2022 Winter Olympics

The 2022 Winter Olympics, formally called the XXIV Olympic Winter Games is an event that the International Olympic Committee has yet to organize. The winning bid will be announced in the Summer of 2015.

Potential bids

Oceania

* New Zealand
**According to 2007 reports, the New Zealand Olympic Committee is pushing for a bid for a Winter Olympic Games. [ [http://www.gamesbids.com/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?category=1&id=1187883962 New Zealand Wants To Host A Winter Olympics] ] Although no city has yet applied to the NZOC, suggestions include Queenstown and Dunedin, or a bid covering the whole of New Zealand, the country's South Island or the Otago region. No certain specific Games has been specified, however 2018, 2022 or 2026 are most likely.

Europe

* Prahova Valley, Romania Romanian Prime Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu announced on June 14 2007 that the country is considering a bid for the Games to be held in that area. [ [http://www.gsp.ro/Alte-sporturi/Jocurile-Olimpice-din-3022-pe-Valea-Prahovei.html?a=3402/13463] ]

North America

**Officials from Quebec and the State of New York have met to discuss the possibility of a joint bid between those two cities considering the proximity between them.cite news |title=State and province push IOC to bend rules in binational bid for the Winter Games |publisher=The Globe and Mail |date=2003-02-13 |author=Rheal Seguin] With Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, the earliest that Canada could hope to host the Olympics is 2022. If selected, the bid would be the first multi-national Olympics games bid, and the first time a city has hosted both the summer and winter Olympics as Montreal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics. However, this violates many of the IOC rules for the selection of a host city. Those rules would have to be waived or changed in order for this bid to continue. A similar multi-national bid between Vancouver and Seattle is being explored for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

South America

* Santiago, Chile

Santiago is a potential candidate for 2018 or 2022. In the next months, the Chilean Ski Federation will choose the candidate city from the winter centers of Chile's Thermal Baths, in the southern regions: the village of Pucon or the city of Chillán, or La Parva ski resort near Santiago. Santiago possesses excellent natural conditions and infrastructure, which some consider the best of the Southern Hemisphere. The Winter Games have never been held in the Southern Hemisphere or South America.
