Through his mother, he is the nephew of The Duke of Edinburgh and is first cousin to The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, The Duke of York, and The Earl of Wessex.[1][2] He is the head of the Grand-Ducal House of Baden and the representative of the descent of the Kings of Sweden of the House of Holstein-Gottorp[citation needed]. Marriage and children
He married Archduchess Valerie of Austria, daughter of Archduke Hubert Salvator of Austria and Princess Rosemary of Salm-Salm, on 23 September 1966 in Salem, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in a civil marriage. They were married in a religious ceremony on 30 September 1966 in Schloss Persenbeug, Austria.[3][4]
- Her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Marie Louise Elisabeth Mathilde Theodora Cecilie Sarah Charlotte of Baden, b. Salem, 3 July 1969 married in Salem civilly on 15 and religiously on 25 September 1999 to Richard Dudley Baker (b. 30 March 1936 at Biddeford, York County, Maine) with a daughter, Sofia Baker, b. 1 March 2001 in Alamosa, Alamosa County, Colorado.
- His Royal Highness Prince Bernhard Max Friedrich August Gustav Louis Kraft of Baden, b. Salem, 27 May 1970, married with three sons
