The 2009 ICC World Twenty20 is a Twenty20 cricket tournament scheduled to take place in England in June of 2009. [ [http://uk.cricinfo.com/db/FORTHCOMING/FUTURE_TOURS/2009.html ICC World Twenty20 2009 to be held in June] , Cricinfo, retrieved 28 November 2007] . It will be the second World Twenty20. Cite web|url=http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/content/current/story/245789.html#Sambit|work=cricinfo.com|title= ICC events|accessdate=2006 ] The tournament will have 12 teams, just like the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in September 2007, despite early reports that the tournament was planned to be a nine-day event, held at two venues, with eight teams taking part. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/4834568.stm England joy at World Cup planning] , from BBC, retrieved 4 December 2006]

In June 2006, The Daily Telegraph reported that the Marylebone Cricket Club and Surrey CCC had put in a joint bid to host the tournament at Lord's and The Oval. [ [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2006/06/01/sccolu01.xml Kent call the tune with a quick single] , by Simon Briggs, retrieved 4 December 2006]

In December 2007, the ICC provisionally approved a Women's World Twenty20 to run alongside the men's subject to budget approval. If approved by the ICC's finance and commercial affairs committee in early 2008, it would come into effect for the 2009 tournament in England. [ [http://content-www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/326140.html Women's World Twenty20 to run alongside the men's] , Cricinfo, retrieved 03 January 2008]

In early January 2008, speculation arose that the tournament could be held elsewhere as the British government have banned Zimbabwe from touring England in 2009. However, it has since been confirmed that the tournament will definitely take place in the country.

In April 2008, the third venue was confirmed as Nottingham's Trent Bridge; The 15,000 seater stadium has been chosen to hold one of the semi-finals, among other earlier matches. Lord's and The Oval are the two other confirmed venues, with the opening match and final being played at Lord's. The Old Trafford Cricket Ground had bid for the third venue, but Trent Bridge was chosen for its closer proximity to the two London grounds.

Groups

The groups were revealed on 31 October 2007, based on finishing positions at the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, though there are two (or possibly three) associate positions which were determined in a tournament to be played in Belfast between 2nd and 4th August 2008 between Kenya, Scotland, Ireland, The Netherlands, Canada and Bermuda. [ [http://icc-cricket.yahoo.com/media-release/2008/June/media-release20080625-42.html] , ICC Website, retrieved 25 June 2008] Ireland and the Netherlands, having reached the final of that competition, qualified as of right.

On 4th July 2008 Zimbabwe, under pressure from South Africa and England over political matters related to Robert Mugabe, pulled out of the tournament of their own volition. The Qualifier was changed to compensate for this shortfall, and it is expected that if Zimbabwe do not participate, they will be replaced by the third placed team from the qualifier tournament, Scotland [http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/7484861.stm, BBC Sport Website, retrieved 4 July 2008 ]
