* 1826 – Gridley Bryant's Granite Railway is incorporated.
* 1839 – William F. Harnden, founder of Harnden and Company, becomes the first person to send an express shipment by rail when he ships an express package from Boston, Massachusetts, to Providence, Rhode Island, on the Boston and Providence Railroad.
* 1890 – Formal completion of the 2.5 km Forth Railway Bridge, the world’s first major steel bridge.

20th century

* 1996 – A Wisconsin Central freight train derails on a broken switch in Weyauwega, Wisconsin. The Weyauwega derailment forced the evacuation of the entire town until March 20 while fire crews worked to control the resulting blaze.
